A cursory look at the Week 6 QBR leaderboard reveals a name that might stick out as being out of place: Andy Dalton. Not only did Dalton (21-of-31 passing, 254 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT) have the second- highest Total QBR of the week (89.8), but he also ranked higher than Tom Brady (78.2, eighth). How did this happen when Brady (29-of-35 passing, 376 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT) and the Patriots had what looked like a convincing 35-17 victory over Dalton and the Bengals?Lets take a closer look:The final score was deceivingFirst, lets examine Daltons game. While the Patriots did pull away at the end, lets not forget that Dalton had the Bengals leading 14-10 early in the third quarter. So it isnt as if the Patriots were in firm control of the game for the duration. There was some back-and-forth throughout the first half, and only later in the third quarter were the Patriots able to pull away. Yes, Daltons safety midway through the third quarter (more on that later) was a key play in helping the Pats turn the game around, but one bad play does not outweigh the rest of his outing. Also lost to a surface examination of the final score is the 16-play, 89-yard drive Dalton led which took up parts of the first and second quarters but fizzled out at the Patriots 1-yard line. Dalton had a pair of key third-down conversions on the drive, including a 32-yard completion to Giovani Bernard on a third-and-8 at the Patriots 38 to set up the Bengals with a first-and-goal at the 6. This wasnt a screen pass where Bernard broke some tackles and made it happen on his own -- Dalton found him 20 yards downfield. After that completion, Dalton was up to a 94.5 QBR. From there, however, the Bengals ran on three of their four attempts, with Daltons only opportunity coming on a third-down jump ball to A.J. Green that fell incomplete.Dalton still gets credit for all the positive plays that got the Bengals near New Englands goal line. It wasnt on him that three of Cincinnatis four plays in a goal-to-go situation were runs that didnt score. The safety wasnt all on DaltonYes, Dalton took a safety that started the Patriots comeback, but before that drive started, he had been exceedingly efficient. Dalton had completed 17 of 21 attempts for 201 yards, had recorded a passing touchdown and a rushing TD, and hadnt been sacked. This was good for a 98.0 QBR up to this point. It is also important to remember that the safety isnt completely on Dalton. The Bengals started that drive at their 16, something Dalton did not control. From there they went backward. A Jeremy Hill rush for no gain was followed up by a Cedric Ogbuehi holding call, putting Cincinnati back to the 8-yard line. From there, Donta Hightower went through the Bengals offensive line effectively untouched and was able to sack Dalton for the safety. Total QBR does employ a division of credit on all plays (good and bad), so Dalton isnt solely debited with the blame for the safety. That said, it still ranks as his worst play of the game and dropped his QBR to 95.3.The other positives for DaltonDalton completed his first 11 pass attempts and though he didnt rush much, he was effective with his feet. His two runs were a 15-yard scramble for a first down and a 2-yard touchdown. He also limited bad plays. Dalton didnt turn the ball over, and aside from the safety took only one other sack -- a drive-killer on Daltons last play of the game in the fourth quarter. Still, to that point Dalton had built up so many positives that the sack only dropped him to an 88.1. When we apply the opponent adjustment -- which takes into account being on the road against a good defense -- that number improves to 89.8.Brady good, but not from start to finishBradys game went mostly in the opposite direction, with a slow start followed by a strong finish. After converting on his initial third down of the game (a 32-yard completion to Rob Gronkowski) that led to a field goal, the Patriots next two drives failed to convert a single third down and ended with punts. Before the touchdown drive to end the first half, Brady had completed 7 of 10 attempts but for only 62 yards, and took a sack that set up a third-and-long at his own 15. At that point his QBR was 33.0. By the time that drive had finished, however, he was back up to 56.He also was excellent in the second half, completing 17 of 19 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns, good for a 95.1 QBR. While Brady did finish hot, the first-half struggles were enough to put his overall game QBR at 84.2, which is adjusted down to a 78.2 against a below-average Bengals defense. So, while it may seem counterintuitive to have Dalton with a higher QBR than Brady in a game he lost 35-17, Dalton did plenty right in the game before it got away from him later in the second half. In addition, Bradys early struggles are captured and weighed appropriately when looking at the entirety of his game. The quick snapshot may say that Brady had the better game, but with QBR were more interested in the complete gallery.A look at Daltons week-to-week progression in the QBR realm: Jared Cook Jersey .
