FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Big plays. Busted coverages. Receivers running free.Thats the way things are going these days in the back end of the New York Jets defense, and opposing offenses know it.Theres a target on our backs in the secondary, safety Calvin Pryor said. Were definitely a part of the problem thats going on right now.The Jets are allowing an average of 285 yards passing per game, ranking them 26th in the NFL in that category. New York is tied for third-worst with 17 pass plays allowed of 20 or more yards, and the Jets are first -- or, last, in this case -- with seven pass plays of 40 or more yards given up.That includes the 42-yard touchdown toss from Seattles Russell Wilson to a wide-open Tanner McEvoy last Sunday , when the Seahawks receiver caught the ball in stride and there wasnt a New York defender within at least 15 yards of him.Its really not miscommunication, so thats probably the wrong choice of word, coach Todd Bowles said. You can call it `busts. Sometimes its not miscommunication when theres only one guy involved. Ive seen certain plays like that that Ive coached the secondary. I dont know if theres been as many at the same time, but overall during the course of the year, youve seen certain plays like that.Weve had way too many. And, no one has been immune from being beat for a big gain. Not even Darrelle Revis.Sure, he is banged up, dealing with a sore hamstring and uncertain to play Sunday at Pittsburgh. But he hasnt been the same shutdown cornerback he established himself to be for much of his terrific career, as evidenced by his struggles against Cincinnatis A.J. Green in Week 1 and Buffalos Marquise Goodwin in Week 2 .Buster Skrine, the Jets other starter, has had his issues, too. Starting safeties Pryor and Marcus Gilchrist have also had shaky moments for a leaky secondary. Meanwhile, the defensive line has helped New York rank second in run defense. The front is doing a great job stopping the run, Pryor said. Its our job to stop the pass and thats what weve got to go out there and do.The Jets face a tough task Sunday in trying to get their secondary right against a pass-happy Steelers offense that routed Kansas City 43-14 last week. Ben Roethlisberger threw five touchdown passes, including two to Antonio Brown.Sammie Coates has at least one reception of 40 yards in each of the Steelers first four games, while Browns four TD catches are tied for the NFL lead.If youre struggling as a secondary, it doesnt matter who you face, Bowles said. You have to fix your problems. So far, that has proven to be much easier said than done for the Jets. And its not necessarily a case in which the scheme needs to be simplified in the secondary.Theyre about as simple as they can be, Bowles said. Thats alarming. Many of the players point to better communication throughout the defense, talking things out and identifying what each of them needs to do on a given play.Weve had a couple of breakdowns, defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said, but I feel totally confident that we can get them fixed. The Jets (1-3) have just three takeaways through four games, two interceptions by backup cornerback Marcus Williams, and a fumble caused by Gilchrist against Kansas City that resulted in a touchback. New York was 3-1 after four games last season, helped in large part by 13 takeaways. If you look back to last year around this time, we had a lot of turnovers and guys making plays on the ball, Pryor said. This year, weve just happened to start off slow. Hopefully we can pick it up and see how things go.It remains to be seen how the Jets will decide to defend Brown, especially if Revis is unavailable. Bowles suggested that it could be a game-time decision on Revis, who hasnt practiced this week.Williams could slide into Revis spot opposite Skrine, and rookie Juston Burris could see extended action. Darryl Roberts could be active for the first time this season, and promoting Bryson Keeton from the practice squad could also be an option.Hes very challenging, man, Pryor said of Brown. Hes a very tough receiver and can do it all. He gets the ball a lot, gets the ball a ton. I think thats what makes him one of the best. Just got to try to limit his targets. As a player, hes definitely a tough matchup for anybody. We want to try to contain him the best we can.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLLonnie Shelton Jersey . WASHINGTON -- Rookie Trea Turner hit his 13th homer, Tanner Roark tuned up for the playoffs with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Saturday while clinching home-field advantage for the NL Division Series.NL East champion Washingtons third trip to the postseason in five years will begin Friday in the nations capital against the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers, with Max Scherzer slated to face Clayton Kershaw. Game 2 is the following day, before the best-of-five NLDS shifts to L.A.The Nationals, it turned out, didnt need to beat the Marlins -- which they did, thanks to Turner, Roark (16-10) and Bryce Harpers RBI single. The Dodgers 3-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants, assuring Washington of finishing with a better record than Los Angeles, was announced before the bottom of the seventh to the Nationals Park crowd of 31,635, which responded with a standing ovation. While home field might not seem like a big deal in a short series, Nationals manager Dusty Baker figured it was important in this instance.Thats because the Dodgers went 53-28 at home, a .654 winning percentage, but are only 38-42 on the road, .475.Theyre under .500 on the road and way over .500 at home. So which one would you suggest? Baker said. Im not a numbers man, exactly, but I think it would be to our best interest -- give us the best chance -- to have them come here, versus us going there.Roark, lined up to pitch Game 2 against the Dodgers, allowed Miami only three hits, including Chris Johnsons RBI single to right in the sixth. Mark Melancon got the last four outs for his 46th save.Turner singled and came around to score on Harpers line drive up the middle in the first inning, then delivered a solo shot off Wei-Yin Chen (5-5) in the fifth. Turner also stole his 32nd base.Harper struck out twice, giving him six Ks in twwo nights after missing four games with a sore left thumb.dddddddddddd Fans booed when he was walked intentionally in the eighth.SITTING STANTONMarlins RF Giancarlo Stanton was out of the starting lineup Saturday, and will be on Sunday, too, manager Don Mattingly said, to make sure the slugger does not enter the offseason hurt. Stanton was sidelined with a groin injury into September. He may get an at-bat, a pinch-hit, or something like that. He still wasnt playing at 100 percent, Mattingly explained, and once the games were meaningless, its harder to take a chance on him having to rehab during the winter.TRAINERS ROOMNationals: LF Jayson Werth was out of the lineup, a day after leaving the game because of a tight back that he said was not a serious injury. Baker called the decision to hold out Werth on Saturday more precaution than anything. ... 2B Daniel Murphy sat out again with an injured glute muscle. He hasnt been in the starting lineup in two weeks, but Baker said he expects the NL MVP contender to be available for Game 1 of the NLDS.UP NEXTMarlins: Wrap up the season, sending RHP Tom Koehler (9-13, 4.15 ERA) to the mound.Nationals: In what will be Washingtons first -- and last -- entirely meaningless game of 2016, RHP Scherzer takes a 19-7 record, 2.82 ERA and career-high 277 Ks into the regular-season finale, chasing an NL Cy Young Award to add to the 2013 AL honor he won for Detroit while going 21-3. Thats been the pinnacle for pitchers ever since I was in the game -- and long before me. It would be forever: `Hes a 20-game winner, Baker said. Expounding on how he views pitchers stats, Baker said: People put a lot of emphasis on ERA, which is good, but I put emphasis on wins for a guy that knows how to win. ' ' '
