TROON, Scotland -- Even during a week when the USGA didnt have a championship, it still came under scrutiny by way of comparisons. With a forecast of gusts topping 30 mph for the third round Saturday, the R&A finished its morning preparation of Royal Troon and decided not to cut or roll the putting surfaces in case the wind got out of hand. The greens were slower, though links putting surfaces typically are not fast. The result was low scoring and quick pace of play. Henrik Stenson, who has a recent history of being put on the clock, and Phil Mickelson finished the final round in just under four hours. The threesomes during the opening two rounds were finishing well under five hours.Mickelson, the runner-up a record six times in the U.S. Open, was asked to explain the difference between how the USGA and R&A sets up the golf course.I think that R&A sets the golf course up to be as fair as possible and to try to kind of identify who the best player is regardless of what the score is given the conditions and so forth, Mickelson said. Sometimes its 20 under. Sometimes people dont want that many under par. But the fact is if somebody plays some incredible golf, thats what it should do. You shouldnt have to mess with the course too much to try to control the score.John Daly won at St. Andrews in a playoff at 282 in windy conditions. Tiger Woods won at St. Andrews in dry and relatively calm conditions at 269.The message was the same on the large scoreboard over the 18th green: Well done, see you next year.Stenson set a major championship record at 264, three shots better than Mickelson. Take away those incredible performances and the winning score would have been 278 by J.B. Holmes. The USGA has it in their mind that the score needs to be par, so no matter what lines they have to cross to get there, thats got to be the standard, and it kind of disregards and doesnt take into account the difference in talent level and abilities that the players of today now have, Mickelson said.He believes the British Open is more fair. He also conceded he was biased.Ive won this one and I havent won the other one, Mickelson said. So Ive got that working against me.---THE GLOBAL GAME: More than being the first Swede to win a major, Henrik Stenson remembers those days when just about every European player was asked about ending the drought. The first alternate is Zac Blair, Harold Varner III, Jonas Blixt, Alex Cejka, Scott Brown and Brian Harman. One spot remained open for the Canadian Open winner if he is not already eligible.Still listed as part of the field is Tiger Woods, who has not played since last August and has not left many indications he is ready to return.---OLYMPIC FORTUNE: David Lingmerth of Sweden is going to the Olympics, and he has Victor Dubuisson to thank for that.Henrik Stenson secured the first spot for the Swedish team long before his record-breaking performance at Royal Troon. The other spot came down to Lingmerth and Alex Noren going into the final week of qualifying. Both were at the Scottish Open.Noren was coming off an eighth-place finish in the French Open to reach No. 99. Lingmerth was at No. 47. Going into the final week, it appeared the only way Noren could pass him was to win the Scottish Open and for Lingmerth to miss the cut.Noren won. Lingmerth missed the cut.One problem.Dubuisson decided to pull out of the Scottish Open on Wednesday, and it affected the strength-of-field just enough that the winner (Noren) received 46 points instead of 48. If the Frenchman had played, Noren would have gone past Lingmerth by the narrowest of margins and headed for Rio.---DIVOTS: Zach Johnsons tie for 12th in the British Open made him the 11th player to surpass $40 million on the PGA Tours career money list. ... EUGENE, Ore. -- The joyful tears in Colorado coach Mike MacIntyres eyes summed up what the victory over Oregon meant for the Buffaloes.Everything.Our goal is to win a Pac-12 championship. I know a lot of people still laugh about it, but thats what those young men believe and if we cant believe it than we can never achieve it, he said.Colorado (3-1) had not been able to defeat the Ducks since joining the Pac-12 in 2011 until Saturday, when Steven Montez threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-38 victory.Ahkello Witherspoon intercepted Dakota Prukops pass to Darren Carrington in the end zone on Oregons final drive to preserve the win.Afterward MacIntyre hugged his son Jay, a sophomore receiver, and wiped away tears as the team celebrated. The Ducks were stunned.I havent been through something like this before. It sucks, Prukop said. Youve just got to eat it, learn from it. Cant let it happen again. Just move on.The Buffaloes had retaken the lead following a controversial 31-yard touchdown from Montez to Bryce Bobo. After review, the officials ruled Bobo had control of the ball in his right hand when his right foot came down in the end zone -- but the crowd at Autzen Stadium booed in disagreement.Im never confident on anything that goes to review, and I dont mean that negatively. You just dont know, MacIntyre said. But the way he caught it and his was foot was in, I thought theyd give it to him. You could see he had possession and he didnt bobble it.The Buffaloes led from the start and went up 33-17 following Montezs 48-yard TD pass to Devin Ross to open the second half. But Kani Benoit scored on a 3-yard touchdown to pull Oregon (2-2) within 33-31. Kani Benoit made his first career start in Freemans place. The Buffaloes didnt have senior quarterback Sefo Liufau, who left the game at the Big House with an ankle injury after throwing for 246 yards and three touchdowns.Montez, who also rushed for 135 yards, was the first CColorado quarterback ever to throw for more than 300 yards and rush for more than 100 in a single game.dddddddddddd sensed the momentum change but I knew it wasnt going to slip away because we are a different Colorado team. Were mentally tough, were mentally strong and were confident, Montez said. I knew the game wasnt going to slip out of our hands.THE TAKEAWAYColorado: The Buffaloes showed surprising toughness on defense despite missing one of their top defensive players, linebacker Derek McCartney, who tore his right ACL and is out for the season. They also were resilient on offense in the absence of Liufau. Ross finished with seven catches for 153 yards.Oregon: It was anticipated that the Ducks would come out with zeal following the disappointing loss to the Huskers but they sputtered from the start, allowing Colorado to jump out to an early 22-7 lead in the opening half. The Ducks appeared to gain some momentum when Danny Mattingly ran 29 yards on a fake punt and Oregon went on to score on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Prukop to Carrington but still struggled against the Buffaloes.ABOUT THOSE TWO-POINT CONVERSIONS: After Colorado took a 10-0 lead early, Taj Griffin scored on a 1-yard run for Oregon. The Ducks looked as though they were lining up for a two-point conversion, drawing strident boos from the crowd at Autzen. But Aidan Schneider ran out to kick the PAT.Last weekend against Nebraska the Ducks went for the two-point conversion five times, and were successful just once. The tactic was questioned in the aftermath of the loss.UP NEXTColorado: After two straight on the road, the Buffaloes return home to host Oregon State.
