Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, Early in Tuesdays Canucks-Habs game, Carey Price stopped a puck on the goal line and then froze the puck. The on-ice refs called no goal and the teams lined up for the face-off. A second or two after play resumed, the Bell Centre horn went off, play was stopped and the possible goal reviewed in Toronto. My understanding was that once play resumed, there could be no further review. What happened here? Thanks, David David: There are two plausible reasons as to why the replay horn did not sound prior to the resumption of play just one minute and four seconds after the opening puck drop - either mechanical or human error. It would appear the horn functioned properly. It is more reasonable to assume that someone in the Situation Room was either slow in viewing the replay and/or thought they saw something worthy of initiating a formal review well after Carey Price made a goalline save. Regardless of the reason for the delay, a potential violation of the rules under which a goal can be awarded (or disallowed) was averted once this late review confirmed that the puck did not enter the net. The Situation Room Blog informs us that they initiated the review to take a closer look at the play. NHL.com - 2014-2015 Situation Room blog VAN @ MTL - 1:04 of the First Period At 1:04 of the first period in the Vancouver Canucks/Montreal Canadiens game, the Situation Room initiated a video review to further examine a play at the Montreal net. Video review confirmed the referees call on the ice that the puck did not cross the Canadiens goal line. No goal Vancouver. They could look at it to their hearts content but if it was subsequently determined that the puck had in fact crossed the line any goal awarded following the resumption of play would have been in violation of Rule 38.1 (v) and 78.6. Both rules clearly state that, Any potential goal requiring video review must be reviewed prior to or during the next stoppage of play. No goal may be awarded (or disallowed) as a result of video review once the puck has been dropped and play has resumed. It took 42 seconds for the linesman to resume play after Price smothered the puck, when referee Marc Joannette blew his whistle from a good position directly behind the net and then signaled no goal with an emphatic wave-off. Linesman Michel Cormier retrieved the puck from Prices glove and repositioned the net that had been knocked off the moorings on the play. The line change process was completed by the neutral zone referee and Cormier conducted a fair face-off that Habs specialist Manny Malhotra won cleanly back toward the end boards. The replay horn then sounded following the resumption of play. There was ample time to initiate a review if someone wanted to further examine the play. It is most fortunate the puck did not enter the net because the dilemma for the Situation Room personnel would then have been to either follow the rules and move on or award a good hockey goal (as we often hear it stated) in violation of rules 38 and 78.6. You can bet someone will have their hand on the switch from this point forward just in case more time is required to further examine a play. Stitched Patriots Jerseys . Bayern won the final 2-0 in extra time, but only after the referee did not award a goal to Borussia Dortmunds Mats Hummels. Replays showed the ball crossed the line before defender Dante kicked it out. It was the latest in a string of wrong decisions, including an allowed goal from a ball that went through the side netting. Two-thirds of the 36 first- and second-division clubs voted against the technology in March, arguing it was too expensive, and the German Footballl League (DFL) shelved the project.dddddddddddd A camera-based system costs about 500,000 euros ($683,000). Bayern now wants the technology to be installed only in the first division to "better protect our football and referees above all." Only half of the 18 first-division teams supported the technology in March. Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said it was unacceptable for the referees to be "dragged through dirt publicly" even though they had no technology at their disposal. "This can and should be prevented," Rummenigge wrote in a letter to the DFL, which runs the Bundesliga. ' ' '
