Natalie Powell claimed a bronze medal for Great Britain on the final day of the IJF World Judo Masters in Mexico. Powell bounced back from a heavy defeat against world champion Kayla Harrison to secure third place in the -78kg category, while team-mate Gemma Gibbons finished fifth. The British duo had to fight each other at the quarter-final stage and it was Powell who claimed the victory - she threw her team-mate for yuko before getting the hold down and taking the contest by ippon. That left Powell to face American judoka Harrison for a place in the final, but the Briton had no answer to a fierce attack just over a minute into the bout, and an ippon throw meant victory for the world champion.Gibbons, silver medalist at London 2012, went into the repechage final against Italys Assunta Galeone and did well to claim victory via waza-ari after having fallen a yuko down in the early stages. That meant bronze medal fights for both British judoka, but Gibbons was unable to overcome world No 3 Guusje Steenhuis from the Netherlands - Steenhuis managed to get a single yuko and that proved enough for a narrow victory. But there was better news for Powell, who secured a pair of waza-ari throws against Chinas Zhehui Zhang to secure a medal in the final event counting for Olympic qualification.Powell said: Its really good to finish the qualification on a high note. Its been a tough few years and after winning the European bronze it was hard to get myself up again for another big tournament.Winning the bronze means that the points I have gained will put me into seventh seed for the Olympic Games if selected.Harrison would go on to successfully defend her title with a win over fourth-ranked Brazilian Mayra Aguiar - she was already in front when closing the fight out with an ippon 54 seconds from the end. Dylan Hartleys conduct as England captain must count in his favour when considering his future in the post, according to the Rugby Football Union.Hartley faces an independent disciplinary hearing on Wednesday to answer for the third red card of his career after being sent off for tackling Sean OBrien from behind with a swinging arm in Northamptons defeat by Leinster.Champions Cup organisers confirmed on Tuesday that the 30-year-old hooker has been charged with striking, entailing a five-week suspension for a mid-range offence and eight weeks if the infringement is considered high-end.Hartley has an appalling disciplinary record comprising of 54 weeks of bans for offences including biting, gouging and butting, a track record that is sure to result in an increase to the sanction imposed.RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie, however, has been impressed by way he has led England during the 13 successive Test victories completed this year and insists the decision of who leads the team ultimately rests with head ccoach Eddie Jones.ddddddddddddDylan has clearly played a fantastic part in captaining the team, on and off the pitch just to be clear, Ritchie said. His leadership credentials are very strong. Hes made a huge contribution, as Eddie would say.So you view all these things in perspective and in perspective one looks at the totality of what hes done and whats happened over the years and I think we should be supportive of that.Ultimately well see what happens -- Im not going to talk about the disciplinary process as you know. That will take its course and well see what happens out of that.If hes eligible for selection its ultimately a matter for Eddie, but we should recognise and support all that Dylan has done in the last 12 months. It is primarily a matter for Eddie and if you look back over it, Eddies judgement has been really good. We should recognise that and Im sure we will. ' ' '
